Dyno Comparison: Skunk2 Pro 1 vs CTR Cams – 60whp gains!
By now everyone has heard that aftermarket naturally aspirated cams make more power than OEM Honda cams in turbo applications. Evans Tuning sells and uses Skunk2 products on our customers and personal cars, so its only natural that we do testing on a product that we back and sell. The Skunk2 Tuner 1 and Pro 1 Series Camshafts are what we have found that works the best in forced induction applications.
The Tuner 1′s are more suited toward cars using equal length manifolds and T3/T4, 30R, 35R, and smaller turbos. The idle is like stock, are emissions exempt and have the best valvetrain wear since they are a little larger than CTR cams. The Pro 1′s are more suited toward cars running equal length manifolds, GT35R, and larger turbos. Spool is increased a few hundred RPMs, and bigger power gains are had compared to the Tuner 1′s. I recently had the opportunity to do a back to back comparison with a customer’s car that switched from the CTR cams to Skunk2 Pro 1′s and had some stellar results! Here is a quick run down on the specs on the customer’s car:

The pulls were done at several different PSI levels, but I used the closest boost levels (18-19 psi) to illustrate the gains from doing the cam switch. There is a solid 60 whp gain in the higher rpms, with 300-400 rpms faster spool. When reviewing the boost plots the Pro 1′s had a peak boost of 18.5 PSI, where the CTR cams had a peak boost of 19.8 PSI. The Pro 1′s were able to make significant gains with approximately 1.5 psi less boost between 8,500-9000 RPMs! Its clear that upgrading your cams from OEM Honda cams to the Pro 1′s will give substantial gains for a reasonable cost. The car feels completely different in higher RPM’s with these cams. From 6000-9500 rpms, its like an entirely different beast compared to the CTR cams I had in there last year. When I did the first 3rd-4th gear pull with the Pro 1′s, I was actually scared of the car for the first time since I boosted. The power gains were noticably there with substainally less boost. I couldn’t be happier. Great tune, great cam.
